The yoga texts recommend kirtan as the most effective form of meditation for this age we are in. Our lives are busier, more stressful and there’s more chaos happening around us. As a result, we need an easy and highly effective form of meditation to practice to combat this difficult time we are in.
Enter KIRTAN! Kirtan is the beautiful chanting of sacred mantras to musical instruments. These sacred mantras are infused with full spiritual potency that have many, many benefits including:
- Easy for the mind to focus
- Very calming for the mind
- Removes unwanted things from around our heart like anger, hurt, greed, lust etc
- Allows us to feel fully satisfied and peaceful within
- Reawakens our dormant spiritual love, happiness and knowledge
- and many more!
The mantras refer to the names and qualities of the Divine, who is residing in our hearts. Mantras help to draw the mind away from this external world and take us inward to reawaken our relationship with the Divine Being. It is through this experience that we can be truly blissful.
Kirtan is a meditation that is fun and enjoyable. Anyone of any age can participate and there are no hard and fast rules for how kirtan should be done. The great personality, Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, described kirtan as:
“This sankirtan, or chanting movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss and it enables us to fully taste the nectar for which we are always anxious.”
