Japa is a beautiful personal practice that is highly effective way to focus and bring a sense of calm to your existence….and it can be done any time of day!
I first started doing japa meditation over 8 years ago and made a commitment to do it every day regardless of what was going on in my life! I can say that I have not missed a day since making that commitment.
Trying to do meditation at home did not come easy to me. I struggled and struggled. The mere thought of sitting and trying focus my mind seemed impossible. A friend of mine gently kept encouraging me to try doing japa meditation, just try it for a week and see how you go. So I finally plucked up the courage and determination to do it and have not looked back since.
What is Japa Meditation?
Japa meditation uses beads or mala to help with the practice. Repeat the mantra on each bead until a full round of the beads is complete. Say the mantra just loud enough so that you can hear it and at a steady pace to focus your mind on. One round of a 108 set of beads usually takes about 10 minutes.
This meditation engages your hearing, speech and touch to connect our external activities with our internal world. In other words, we redirect our senses onto the meditation and the mind will more easily follow. This is because whatever we do with our senses, it creates in memory in our minds. By using our senses to meditate, the mind follows that sound and sensation and be drawn into a state of focus.
When to Practice Japa?
I love to start my day with my meditation. It sets the tone for my day and allows me to more mindful of my daily activities. I also love to do it when I get home from work, it’s like hitting the reset button and then again before bed.
Before starting your day is the best time to do it, but any time of day can be good. Basically, just try to fit it into your life whenever you can. Trust me, you’ll feel so much better for doing it regardless of the time of day!
The key here is to regularly practice – daily is best as you’ll notice the differences in your life more quickly. Find yourself 10 minutes in your day, regardless of what other stuff is going on, and do it!
What Mantra should I use?
My recommendation would be to start with a simple mantra. Choose one of these:
Aum Hari Aum
Haribol Nitai Gaur Nitai Gaur Haribol
Madana Mohana Murari
